“From my experience, the prettier the girl is, the more nuts she is…which makes you insane.” Two years ago today, I watched Blue Valentine, and it is probably the most devastatingly sad movie to watch on a day already pinned “Singles Awareness Day.” But, it was really good. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling were perfect together, and it totally made me feel all the things (Girls reference). After the film ended, my friend and I sat in the theatre after the credits, taking it in. I haven’t watched the movie since because it’s not really an easy movie to take. It’s heavy, and sort of depressing, but in a beautiful, [...]

Manic Pixie Dream Girls (and an Ode to John Green)
The “manic pixie dream girl” trope is something I have always been fascinated by. By definition, this a character in books, films, television and contemporary storytelling as a whole that “exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” Essentially, it is a female character who enters the life of a male character in order to change him and make him better whilst not really growing herself or being a fully realized character. Instead, she is often this nymph-like creature who’s high on life and full of strange, wonderful quirks. Case in point: although entertaining, [...]
It’s snowing.
It’s cold out and snowing quite a lot. I’ve heard that this is supposed to be the worst snowstorm in the past two years. In reality, that’s not so bad because winters have been mild…but I’m still not a fan of it. This is music that’s kind of winter-y in a sleepy-lazy-stay-home-and-drink-tea kind of way. At least for me. Enjoy. NYC ’12
This past summer I was in New York one week too early for Fashion Week. Prior to this trip, I had visited the city once when I was 12, and another time for just a day six years ago. Seeing as this was the first time I had ever been able to actually experience New York on my own terms, I completely fell in love. Needless to say, reading about all the events and shows at places I had visited just one week prior was a little heartbreaking. Well, catwalk season is approaching, and once again, I’m not in New York. Here’s to reminiscing. Instead of fashion, the trip was [...]
Genetic Lottery
This TED talk by Cameron Russell is something I found last week and have already shared via both Twitter and Facebook. I watched it again today and re-realized just how important it is, and how prevalent Russell’s message is. I am incredibly taken by how frank and honest she is about society’s attitude towards physical appearance and its associated privilege. She was also interviewed on CNN, and she was pretty great there too.
