Clueless = Best Ever.

By Internet standards, I’m totally late on seeing this. Early this month, Wildfox released a lookbook inspired by Clueless, one of the best things ever. Wildfox isn’t really my style clothing wise, but generally they do pretty awesome lookbooks. I mean, Charlotte Free.

The brand’s Clueless lookbook essentially re-invents the movie’s key scenes in a really fun, accurate way. It’s campy, nostalgic, and definitely zeroes in on the idea that the 90′s are back. Just a couple days ago, my sister and I were watching an early episode of FRIENDS and commenting on/mostly joking about how hip Monica Geller‘s (and sometimes Rachel‘s) wardrobe would be today. But anyway. Although I couldn’t find the Clueless lookbook on Wildfox’s website, the entirety can be found on Refinery29 — all 49 images of Clueless-inspired-awesomeness.

Portfolio Update

28/01/13 – 5:13 PM

update0113

Yesterday marked my first day off in a few days, during which I was finally able to hide from all the freezing winter weather whilst sipping on tea. Exciting life, right? Seeing as I had no plans of leaving my house, I also decided to update my portfolio with a couple small things I’ve been meaning to add for awhile and clean it up just a little. Take a look if you so please: http://maeganfidelino.com.

Thoughts on Lolita

27/01/13 – 11:55 AM

Lolita by Kathryn Macnoughton

Artwork by the super-talented Kathryn MacNoughton

Apart from getting this blog up and running, my biggest accomplishment of the month was finishing Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita.

I don’t know if this is embarrassing to admit, but it was the most difficult book I have ever tried to conquer. Over the span of (unmentionable) months I tried to bring myself to finish it, I would mention my reading it to friends and they would respond in shock that I hadn’t done so in the past. It was what I presume to be a very “me” book for a variety of reasons. But I COULD NOT get through it.

Here’s why: after the initial seduction, there was nothing for me to look forward to. Yes, it was beautifully written. It was twisted and tragic and disturbing. But it just wasn’t very compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed the first third of the novel — Humbert2‘s backstory and initial time spent with Lo. I carried the novel around for months but just had no will to finish it. Unfortunately, I found the character development overall to be sorely lacking. They failed to draw me in, and I just couldn’t couldn’t bring myself to care (in disgust nor sympathy) about Humbert2‘s love/lust for such an annoying little brat.

The language of Lolita is exquisite, especially given the fact that English was not Nabokov’s first (or even second or third) language. The novel is a great piece of literature, and lovely in its own disturbing way, but just not riveting enough to keep me reading.

Two and a half stars out of five.

Winter Blues = Summer Nostalgia

24/01/13 – 5:21 PM

Old Montreal

The Weeknd

Osheaga

Florence & the Machine

Seeing as temperatures have been astoundingly cold and all I’ve been wanting to do is stay indoors drinking tea, I’m finding myself nostalgic for warm summer days. These are just a few lacklustre photos from my trip to Montreal last August for Osheaga, Canada’s Coachella imitation festival. The trip was comprised of good music, plentiful shopping, and copious amounts of poutine consumption. Despite the extreme heat/torrential rain, lack of cell phone reception, and bad tan lines that I probably still have, Osheaga was an experience I would definitely repeat.

Hi. Welcome and stuff. I’m bad at introducing myself, or long-winded autobiographical musings. So instead, here’s what I’m carrying in my bag. (From left to right, kind of)

1. Apple earbuds/iPhone 4S in white.
I’m one of the few people to only have switched over from a Blackberry this year. It’s been great so far, but I’m still sometimes tempted to join the Android bandwagon.

2. Leather gloves
They are maroon, and unfortunately, I always forget to put them on before going outside. Once I am outside and already feeling like my fingers will freeze and die, I often choose to play with my touchscreen phone instead of opting for warmth. Sorry, fingers.

3. Gucci Wallet
Don’t worry, I know it’s fake. I still like it though.

4. Rayban wayfarers in tortoiseshell
Despite losing a pair and then re-purchasing the exact same pair, I stand by saying that these are among my best purchases. Something you can wear almost everyday of the year is something worth investing in.

5. EOS lip balm
It’s mint.

6. Makeup
Yes, I carry 4 kinds of lipsticks. And a lip stain. I also carry 2 different black liquid eyeliners and cream blush. My eyelash curler is missing from these pictures. Pictured lip things include: Revlon lip butters in Red Velvet and Candy Apple, Victoria Secret lipstick, and 17 (from Boots) Lasting Fix lipstick in Showcase. The eyeliners are a random drugstore brand and Motives, which is almost as good as the Stila one.

7. Ephemera from my wallet
Loose change, business card, Starbucks card. I am a total Starbucks snob.

8. Keys
Self-explanatory.

9. TTC tokens
I live in Toronto. I don’t have my license, but I don’t really mind (though I guess I should). Typically, I have a metropass, but some months (like this one) I decide to be crazy and use tokens instead.

10. The latest issue of Worn Journal, a notebook, a pen, and the book I am currently reading
I’m a new design intern at Worn Journal, which is an awesome Toronto-based magazine with an intelligent take on fashion. If you haven’t picked it up, you should. I’ve just started reading Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. I’ll let you know how that goes. The notebook, sadly, is usually only filled with to-do lists.
