I just saw Spring Breakers. I was half expecting it to be an awful waste of money (though I used SCENE points), and half thought it would be interesting but not great. The verdict? I thought it was amazing. Here’s why: 1. My opinion was likely swayed by Lena Dunham tweeting that it was “the only art film to star a teen wizard” a few weeks ago. As such, I walked into the theatre expecting it to be more than just the sum of its parts. It was. Spring Breakers is definitely not a film that everyone will like, and depending how you decide to watch the movie, it could [...]

Good luck exploring your infinite abyss.
A couple days ago, I found out someone I recently met and who I think is pretty cool hasn’t yet seen Garden State. It was a deal breaker. (Just kidding, Chesca.) But anyway, I then remembered this review of the film I wrote way back when I was seventeen. In a way, I suppose this is a “Throwback Thursday.” GARDEN STATE (2004) ***** A surreal, almost-profound story depicting life, this movie is a ride through New Jersey in the eyes of an overmedicated would-be actor. It is a mix of wildly eccentric characters – from a free-spirited local girl, to a millionaire living off the invention of silent Velcro. A [...]
Blue Valentine
“From my experience, the prettier the girl is, the more nuts she is…which makes you insane.” Two years ago today, I watched Blue Valentine, and it is probably the most devastatingly sad movie to watch on a day already pinned “Singles Awareness Day.” But, it was really good. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling were perfect together, and it totally made me feel all the things (Girls reference). After the film ended, my friend and I sat in the theatre after the credits, taking it in. I haven’t watched the movie since because it’s not really an easy movie to take. It’s heavy, and sort of depressing, but in a beautiful, [...]
Clueless = Best Ever.
By Internet standards, I’m totally late on seeing this. Early this month, Wildfox released a lookbook inspired by Clueless, one of the best things ever. Wildfox isn’t really my style clothing wise, but generally they do pretty awesome lookbooks. I mean, Charlotte Free. The brand’s Clueless lookbook essentially re-invents the movie’s key scenes in a really fun, accurate way. It’s campy, nostalgic, and definitely zeroes in on the idea that the 90′s are back. Just a couple days ago, my sister and I were watching an early episode of FRIENDS and commenting on/mostly joking about how hip Monica Geller‘s (and sometimes Rachel‘s) wardrobe would be today. But anyway. Although I [...]
